We may still be in the glow of Emma Stone's Oscar win for Poor Things, but we already have a first look at her next performance — which happens to be her latest collaboration with director Yorgos Lanthimos. For those keeping count, this is their fourth project together.
Kinds of Kindness (originally titled AND) was filmed in New Orleans while Poor Things was in post-production, with Lanthimos enlisting Stone and co-stars Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley, as well as another star from his 2018 film The Favourite, Joe Alwyn. The cast also includes Lanthimos first-timers Jesse Plemons, Hong Chau, Mamoudou Athie, and Hunter Schafer.
The triptych fable follows a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability, who is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.
"It's a contemporary film, set in the U.S. — three different stories, with actors who play one part in each story, so they all play three different parts. It was almost like making three films, really," the filmmaker previously told The Guardian. "It's great to be working again with Emma. It makes it so much easier to have someone there who trusts you so much, and who you trust so much."
At the 96th Oscars, Poor Things took home Oscars for Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Production Design, amongst 11 total nominations. Lanthimos directs Kinds of Kindness from a script he wrote with Efthimis Filippou (his co-writer on Dogtooth, Alps, The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer). The film was produced by Lanthimos, Kasia Malipan, and Best Picture-nominated Poor Things producers Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe.
Kinds of Kindness will open in theaters on June 21. Watch the teaser trailer below.
